Caplinger, Malin Space Science Systems Version 1.1, 9 May 2013 * Introduction This document is a summary of key calibration information for the MSL instruments provided by MSSS (Mastcam, MAHLI, and MARDI, generically called MMM.) It is intended to assist in the use of data products from these instruments as archived with the Planetary Data System. Most users of the image data should have no need to consult this document, since the RDRs can be used directly and their processing is generally described in the Data Product SIS. Edgett et al, Space Science Reviews, 170: 259 - 317 (2012). * General ** Radiometry Most users interested in doing radiometric analyses should use the 16-bit radiometric RDRs ("DRXX" products). These have been decompressed, dark-subtracted as needed, and flat-fielded. Labels are provided in each product to relate the 16-bit pixel values in those files to I/F, defined as the ratio between the observed signal level and that which would be produced by imaging a perfectly white surface, illuminated by sunlight, at the perihelion distance of Mars, with no atmospheric attentuation, and at zero incidence angle. To determine this ratio for individual images, we make use of the following reference cases, which have been computed for a white target, the 34mm Mastcam, a solar distance of 2.07e8 km, and an exposure time of 10 msec: filter signal (12-bit DN) ------ ------------------ Bayer red 9343 green 10089 blue 9802 Narrowband 440 2016 525 1796 675 1635 750 1045 800 709 865 364 905 267 935 161 1035 104 Note that the narrowband signal levels are computed for the dominant Bayer position in cases where the Bayer filters are not uniformly transmitting; for example, for the 525nm filter, the green position is used. To compute the expected signal level for a exposure time of ex milliseconds at a solar distance of dsun km, use the following expression: signal = reference*ex/10*2.07e8**2/dsun**2*camera_factor where camera_factor is 1.0 for the 34mm Mastcam, 6.7 for MARDI, 0.67 for MAHLI, and 0.64 for the 100mm Mastcam. In this simplified discussion, the camera_factor has been computed only from the f/numbers of the individual cameras; there are small excursions from this due to the slightly different optical transmissions of the systems, but these cause less than 10% difference. More precise calculations can be made using the data below. Note that most radiometric applications will likely be better served by narrowband images, since unmeasured variations in the Bayer filter bandpasses may introduce errors at the 10% level. For example, the color balancing applied to Bayer color images for "DRCX" products was derived empirically by imaging of sun-illuminated gray targets, not directly from the bandpass data. ** Calibration Targets All of the data presented in this document were derived from measurements made on Earth, most before the instruments were assembled. There are two calibration targets mounted on the MSL rover intended for supplemental in-flight calibration. Dust contamination has rendered use of these targets problematic, but they may still be of some utility. The Mastcam calibration target is a flight spare of the Pancam calibration target carried on the MER rovers, with the addition of magnets intended to reduce dust contamination. This target is described in "Dust on the Curiosity Mast Camera Calibration Target", K. M. Kinch, et al, 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (2013), Abstract 1061. The reflectances of the three rings of the this target are nominally 20% ("black"), 40% ("gray"), and 60% ("white"); +/- 3% tolerance applies to these values exclusive of any contamination. The MAHLI calibration target is primarily intended for geometric and focus purposes. It has no magnets and was heavily contaminated with dust during the MSL landing. That said, the target has six color chips, five of which (red, green, blue, gray, and white) were assembled from spare material left over from the MER targets. The sixth chip was produced using a UV fluorescent material to aid in aliveness checking of MAHLI's UV LEDs. * Data ** KAI-2020CM Quantum Efficiency All of the MMM instruments use the Truesense (formerly Kodak) KAI-2020CM image sensor. These 12-bit pixels have a nominal scale factor of 16.3 electrons per Data Number (DN). The read noise is about 1 DN for all cameras. The full well for the cameras is about 30,000 electrons. Most of the data products from the cameras are encoded ("companded") from 12-bit to 8-bit form using a lookup table with 4096 entries. A residual DC offset is subtracted prior to encoding; this DC offset is commandable and given in the label information for each data product. The default table quantizes larger DNs more coarsely because larger values have a higher shot noise component. All of the companding and decompanding tables are given elsewhere. * MAHLI ** Bandpass filter The front element of the MAHLI optics is a sapphire window which protects the internal mechanism of the optics and filters out undesired infrared and ultraviolet light.
