PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT INTERCHANGE_FORMAT = ASCII PUBLICATION_DATE = 2000-01-04 NOTE = "SP-Kernel Information" END_OBJECT = TEXT END General information about SPICE SP-kernels ========================================== The purpose of the SP-kernel -- which stands for S(pacecraft) and P(lanet) Kernel -- is to allow ephemerides for any collection of solar system bodies, spacecraft or any other objects in 3D space to be combined under a common file format, and accessed by a common set of subroutines. The SPK format is supported by a collection of subroutines that are part of the SPICELIB library, the major component of the NAIF Toolkit. These subroutines can be integrated into user application programs. The SPICE system toolkit for a number of computer platforms or information regarding how it can be obtained is located in the SOFTWARE subdirectory of the main directory of this dataset. To use SP-kernels, a Leapseconds (LSK) is required. Also, to use SP-Kernels containing positions given relative to the non-inertial and project-defined frames, a Frame Definitions (FRAMES) and Planetary Constants (PcK) files are required. Refer to the SPK.REQ document provided with the toolkit or available from the NAIF Node of PDS if SPICE toolkit is not included with this data set to get more information on how to access SP-kernel data. MGS SP-kernels provided on this volume ====================================== The following MGS SP-kernels are provided on this volume (only name portion of the file name is shown on the right; the extension of all file names is ".bsp"): -- MGS Spacecraft Trajectory SPK files: MGS_SPO2_GSFC SPK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 2 (SPO-2) phase of the mission, created by merging quick-look OD solution SPK files from MOLA POD Team, GSFC. MGS_SPO2 SPK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 2 (SPO-2) phase of the mission, created by merging regular OD solution SPK files from MGS NAV. MGS_SPO2_GSFC_MGM0883 SPK file covering whole SPO-2 phase of the mission, created by merging quick-look OD solution SPK files generated by MOLA POD Team, GSFC using updated gravity model mgm0883. MGS_SPO2_GSFC_MGM0890 SPK file covering whole SPO-2 phase of the mission, created by merging quick-look OD solution SPK files generated by MOLA POD Team, GSFC using updated gravity model mgm0890. MGS_SPO2_IPNG SPK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 2 (SPO-2) phase of the mission, created by merging OD solution SPK files from Inner Planet Navigation and Gravity group, JPL. MGS_AB2 SPK file covering the whole Aerobraking-2 phase of the mission, created by merging regular OD solution SPK files from MGS NAV. -- MGS Spacecraft Structures Fixed Offset SPK files: MGSSTRUCT_HGA SPK file containing location of the HGA structures with respect to each other. MGSSTRUCT_MAGER SPK file containing location of the MGA Solar Array structures and MAG Sensors with respect to each other. -- Solar System Bodies Ephemeris data SPK file: MAR033 SPK file containing JPL's Development Ephemerides (DE) 405 and Mars Satellite Ephemerides (MAR) MAR033.7. All this data is actual (reconstructed). SPK Files Used for Archiving ============================ The following SPK files were recommended by the MGS project Science Office to be used as "official" files to support archiving of the science data by the project science instrument teams: MGS_SPO2_GSFC.BSP MGS_AB2.BSP Note that these files were chosen because they supposedly contained the best orbital solution available at the time of archiving (summer-fall 1998.) Kernel File Details =================== The most detailed description of the data in each SPK file is provided in metadata included inside the comment area of the file. This information can be viewed using utility programs COMMNT and SPACIT included into the NAIF Toolkit.
