                    INDEX Directory Contents

The INDEX directory contains files named *INDEX.TAB which list every 
data product on the archive volume. There is one index table for each 
data set in the archive. Each index table is accompanied by
a PDS label that describes the format and contents of the table.  

Each index table contains one row (record) for each data product in the
data set. Each row contains several columns (fields) that describe the
data product: the product ID, the directory and file name, the product
creation date, etc. 

     The table is formatted so that it can be read directly into many
data management systems.  All fields are separated by commas, and
character fields are enclosed in double quotation marks (").
Character fields are left justified, and numeric fields are right
justified.  Each record ends with ASCII carriage return and line feed
characters.  This allows the file to be read by various computer 
operating systems.
