The SPIKE directory treewill eventually contain spike files for each
NIMS EDR. These will be generated by a specialized program (yet to be
written) which will search for telemetry errors and anomalies in the
data.  The information in the files will then be available for use by
cube generation and analysis programs operating on EDRs without the
expense of regenerating the spike files.  

Presently, spike files have been produced for only three EDRs from
the Ida encounter, all of them containing "high resolution" data
obtained around closest approach.  These spike files were generated
manually.  It is questionable whether spike files will prove useful
for the other Ida EDRs, since their data is almost entirely of dark sky.
