CLEMENTINE NIR DIGITAL IMAGE MODEL

Clementine NIR Digital Image Model

Information and Browser for CD Volume CL_5031

This CD is one of 78 CD volumes that contain the full resolution Clementine NIR Digital Image Model (DIM) of Earth's Moon. This multispectral lunar DIM is a radiometrically and geometrically controlled, photometrically modeled global image mosaic compiled using more than 400,000 images from multiple filter observations of the Near-Infrared (NIR) camera onboard the Clementine Spacecraft. The DIM mosaic is mapped in the Sinusoidal Equal-Area projection at a resolution of 100 meters per pixel requiring approximately 68 gigabytes of digital storage. This database is partitioned into quads or "tiles" equivalent to the previously released Clementine UVVIS DIM Mosaic (PDS volumes CL_4001 through CL_4078). Tiles are stored as image files of approximately 2100 pixels on a side. Pixels are 16-bit signed The full-resolution tiling and CD volume archive scheme is available here (Adobe PDF Format). A volume-quad locator map is also available (locator requires JavaScript enabled browser).

First Time Users
New and first time users may want to start by reading the aareadme.txt file. It provides additional documentation and general information regarding the NIR Digital Image Model CD archive.

Browse the Image Collection on this CD
You can view browse versions (at reduced spatial resolution) of enhanced color, color ratio, and b/w (20000nm) images derived from the CD image products. See the browinfo.txt file for more information regarding the browse collection.

A detailed description of the Clementine NIR DIM with information about the organization and compilation of the database is provided in the file: volinfo.htm. Please refer to this document for more information.

The Clementine NIR Mosaic was compiled for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). See the acknowledgements section of the document/volinfo files for a complete list of those who contributed.

The Clementine NIR DIM can be obtained through the following PDS Imaging Node online resources: PDS Planetary Image Atlas (http://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/Admin/resources/cd_clementine.html#clmBASE) and/or PDS Map-a-Planet (http://www.mapaplanet.org/explorer/moon.html). DVD volumes can be obtained by contacting Lisa Gaddis, U.S. Geological Survey, 2255 North Gemini Drive, Flagstaff, AZ 86001 [telephone: (928) 556-7053, e-mail: lgaddis@usgs.gov].

The image files are organized according to NASA's PDS standards. An image file (tile) is organized as a PDS labeled file containing an "image object". Additionally, each image file is associated with an Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS) "qube object" detached label. This detached label allows for images to be accessed and processed in the ISIS system (available through the USGS, Flagstaff, AZ). Within ISIS, users should reference the detached label file when accessing image files on this CD set. Other access tools are available that support the Clementine NIR DIM. A software tool called "MapMaker" enables users to extract seamless mosaics of images for any latitude-longitude region and at a variety of scales in different map projections. MapMaker, available for distribution through the PDS Imaging Node, can output images in a variety of formats common to the user community (gif, jpeg, tiff, PDS). Also, see the "NASAView" discussion below in the "Image Display for Full Resolution Image Products" section.

Digital storage requirements for the full resolution image products range from ~45MB to ~84MB. These images have the 'img' filename extension and are found in the 'data' directory.

Image Display for Full Resolution Image Products

In addition to displaying reduced resolution 'browse' images within this HTML interface, graphics based interfaces provided above are also designed to allow for display of full resolution image products. The program NASAView can be used for this purpose. NASAView is a PDS product display tool that runs on multiple platforms with a common graphical user interface. NIR DIM multi-band image cubes can be displayed (up to 3 selected bands) within NASAView. See the PDS Home Page for more information on NASAView and it's availability (http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/). The PDS Home Page will lead you to the site for direct access to NASAView which is (as of release date of this DVD) http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/software_download.cfm.

CD Volume and Directory Structure

The CD contents and directory structure are presented below. Directories (folders) are indicated by boldface type. Documentation and other ancillary support files may be viewed by selecting (clicking) the desired filename. Detailed documentation regarding the Clementine NIR datset are available in the aareadme (top level directory) and volinfo (document directory) files.
